About Pocket Nerd
We compare insurance and connectivity in South Africa, in plain language, showing where every number came from. This is what we are trying to do and how we judge whether it is working.

What we are
A South African comparison site for insurance and connectivity. We explain how cover actually works, publish what the official record says about how insurers treat people who claim, and give you free tools to work out your own numbers before you speak to anyone.
When you want quotes, you choose which insurers hear from you and we pass your details to those and nobody else.
Why it exists
Financial comparison in South Africa mostly means a quote form with some words around it. The words are usually written to get you to the form, not to answer your question, and the numbers rarely say where they came from.
Meanwhile South Africa publishes genuinely good public data that nobody has turned into something a normal person can use. The Ombud publishes complaint outcomes per insurer. The FSCA publishes who is licensed. SAPS publishes what gets stolen. It is all free, and it is all sitting in PDFs.
That gap is the whole idea.
What we hold ourselves to
- Plain South African English. If a sentence needs reading twice, it is our fault, not yours.
- Every figure carries its source and the date we checked it.
- Where nobody publishes a reliable number, we say so rather than inventing one.
- No email wall in front of a tool. Use it, get your answer, leave.
- Nobody contacts you unless you ticked their name.
What we are not
We are not an insurer and we do not underwrite anything. We do not give financial advice, and nothing on the site takes your personal circumstances into account. Our calculators are arithmetic on the numbers you enter, not quotes.
Your policy wording is the document that decides what happens when you claim. It beats anything we publish, and we would rather you read it.
How we are paid
Insurers pay us for enquiries. You never pay us anything. What that does and does not influence is set out plainly in how we make money, and the rules we write to are in our editorial policy.
Where we are
Cape Town, South Africa. Everything we publish is written for the South African market, because insurance advice written for somewhere else is worse than none.
