Privacy notice
What we collect, why we collect it, who we give it to, and how to get it back or have it deleted. Written to be read, not to be survived.

This document is not final
The company details below are still outstanding and this notice has not been through legal review. It describes accurately what the site does today, and it must be completed and reviewed before Pocket Nerd accepts enquiries from the public.
Who we are
Pocket Nerd is operated by Registered company name to be confirmed, registration number Company registration number to be confirmed, of Registered physical address to be confirmed, Cape Town, South Africa.
Our Information Officer, as required by POPIA, is Information Officer to be appointed and registered. You can reach us at hello@pocketnerd.co.za.
The short version
- You can use every tool and read every guide on this site without telling us anything about yourself.
- We only collect personal information when you fill in the enquiry form.
- We only pass your details to the insurers you tick. Nobody else gets them, and we do not sell them.
- Agreeing to be contacted about your quote is separate from agreeing to marketing, and you can say yes to one and no to the other.
- You can ask for a copy of what we hold, or ask us to delete it, at any time.
What we collect, and when
Nothing, if you are just reading. The guides, the tools and the calculators all run without an account. The calculators work entirely in your browser: the numbers you type into them are never sent to us.
If you complete an enquiry, we collect your first name, email address and mobile number, along with what you are insuring, your suburb, your age, your claim history, and the insurers you chose. We also record the IP address and browser the submission came from, and the date and time.
If you start an enquiry and stop, and you had already given us an email address, we keep that along with what you had filled in so far. These are kept separately from completed enquiries and are never sent to an insurer, because you had not chosen one and had not consented to anything.
Why we are allowed to have it
For enquiries, our lawful basis is your consent. You give it by ticking the box on the last step of the form, and we record which words you were shown when you ticked it.
The wording currently in use, version 2026-10-13.1, is:
“Yes, Pocket Nerd may contact me about this enquiry. I understand my details are not being sent to any insurer yet, and that Pocket Nerd will ask me first before passing them to anyone.”
“Pocket Nerd may send me tips and deals. Optional, and separate from the permission above.”
Those are two separate permissions. Under section 69 of POPIA, direct marketing needs its own consent, so we record them as two separate entries and we record a refusal as carefully as an agreement.
Who we share it with
- No insurer, at the moment. We are still finalising which insurers we work with, so enquiries are held by us and passed to nobody. The insurers you ticked are stored with your enquiry as a preference, and when we can act on it we will contact you and ask before passing anything on.
- Our hosting and database providers, who process data on our behalf under contract and may not use it for anything else. Our database is hosted in Frankfurt, Germany.
- Nobody else. We do not sell personal information, and we do not pass it to data brokers or advertisers.
Because our database is outside South Africa, your information is transferred across a border. POPIA allows this where the receiving country has comparable protection, and Germany is subject to the GDPR, which is stricter than POPIA in most respects.
How long we keep it
Enquiries are kept for as long as needed to pass them on and deal with anything arising from them, and then for as long as we are required to keep records. Consent records are kept for longer than the enquiry itself, because their purpose is to evidence what you agreed to.
Unfinished enquiries are kept for a short period and then removed. If you ask us to delete your information, we delete it regardless of these periods, unless the law requires us to keep a specific record.
Your rights, and how to use them
Under POPIA you can:
- Ask what personal information we hold about you, and get a copy of it.
- Ask us to correct anything that is wrong.
- Ask us to delete it.
- Withdraw your consent at any time, including your consent to marketing, without giving a reason.
- Object to us processing your information.
- Complain to the Information Regulator if you are not happy with how we handled it.
Email hello@pocketnerd.co.za and say what you want. We do not charge for this and we will not ask you why. Note that once an insurer has your details, they hold their own copy under their own privacy notice, so you may need to ask them separately as well.
Where to complain
Tell us first, because we would rather fix it. If that does not resolve it, these are independent and free:
- National Financial Ombud Scheme South Africa
Free, independent resolution of complaints about banks, insurers and credit providers once the company has had a chance to resolve it first.
- Financial Sector Conduct Authority
Regulates the conduct of financial services providers, and keeps the public register of who is licensed.
- Information Regulator of South Africa
Enforces POPIA. You can complain to them about how any organisation, including us, handles your personal information.
Changes to this notice
If we change what we collect or what we do with it, we update this page and change the date at the top. Where a change affects consent you have already given, we ask again rather than assuming the old consent carries over.
